PDO threads have become a popular minimally invasive alternative to surgical facelift procedures and have given rise to the emerging cat eye, V-line, and snatched jawline trends. With an innovative patented technology in which the barbs are press-moulded and configured in a 360-degree helical pattern, MINT™ PDO offers the most robust threads on the market. This revolutionary technology allows instant yet profound results while minimising pain & trauma – allowing clients to benefit from a shorter recovery.
For delegates new to A.T.A.I, all our courses have a foundation of theory considered the minimum for delivering Cosmetic Procedures, as laid out by Health Education England (HEE). We follow these guidelines as best practices in delivering cosmetic procedures as Ireland at this time has no framework for the aesthetic sector,

The PDO in MINT™ PDO stands for polydioxanone. It’s a monofilament synthetic polymer used to create a suture or thread. PDO is nonpyrogenic and non-antigenic, making it a safe suture material for insertion.
The PDO thread undergoes biodegradation once it’s inserted into the skin. It fully dissolves into water and carbon dioxide via hydrolysis over a period of 4 to 6 months, not leaving behind any foreign materials in the body.
Not only is it safe, but studies have also shown that PDO elicits positive changes to the surrounding tissues that result in Neocollagenesis, a fibrous merging effect, fat reduction, tissue contracture, and an improved vascular environment.
The PDO threads used in aesthetic medicine today have been around for 10-15 years, but PDO sutures have actually been used in orthopaedic and cardiovascular surgery for over 30 years. While the application is newer, the concept behind PDO threads has been around for a long time.
Reduce skin laxity – Environmental factors that contribute to skin laxity include ageing, genetics, stress, sun exposure, weight fluctuations, and smoking which reduce the collagen and elastin in our skin.
Increase skin elasticity – Skin elasticity is the skin’s ability to stretch and return to its original shape. Loss of skin elasticity is known as elastosis. Elastosis causes the skin to look saggy, crinkled, or leathery. Areas of the skin exposed to the sun can get solar elastosis.
Restore volume – As we age and lose collagen and elastin, the skin starts to sag, a hollowing out of facial areas begins as we lose volume from the facial fat pads. Injectable collagen stimulators aid in the restoring of facial volume loss and are often incorporated with traditional dermal filler.
Skin tightening – Through complementary therapy such as combining micro-needling, PRP, and traditional injectables, a more youthful appearance can be achieved with immediately visible results in many cases.
Collagen production – Collagen is such a central building block of the body, contained in bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Collagen is also found in many other body parts, including blood vessels, corneas, and teeth. The word’s etymology is Greek, “kólla,” which very aptly means “glue” there are at least 16 types of collagen in the body; we concern ourselves with the four main types, type I, II, III, and IV.
The role of hyaluronic acid is to help bind moisture in the skin and help produce collagen and elastin. As we age, our bodies produce less and less hyaluronic acid; volume is lost from the fat pads, interconnecting tissues lose strength. The lack of hyaluronic acid production leads to a lack of skin hydration and skin laxity, leading to the formation of wrinkles in the skin.
Skin boosters contain a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, also depending on the brand cocktails of amino acids and peptides. Skin boosters tend to have the consistency of a gel-like substance, which enables them to be distributed very smoothly and evenly throughout the skin.
The purpose of the skin booster is to stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin through the release of hyaluronic acid and other compounds specific to each skin booster brand. That is essentially what makes skin boosters different to many other skin treatments. The purpose of skin boosters is not to cover up or hide skin imperfections. All regenerative skin health treatments can remedy these imperfections by stimulating the natural production of collagen and elastin.
Skin boosters are all about skin tone texture hydration and improving skin laxity. It is why skin boosters are often referred to as injectable moisturisers and are becoming an increasingly popular treatment to improve the skin’s texture, create a better skin tone, treat skin laxity while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
Combining treatments provides a treatment pathway more suited to many clients expectations. From PDO threads, chemical peels, dermal filler through to IPL all benefit from paring with skin boosters. Training with A.T.A.I. opens your career to a world of options.
MINT PDO Thread training is provided through a 6 step system from basic to expert. Courses can be booked together for an overall course fee reduction of 20%. Practitioners cannot progress to higher levels of training without foundation training. However, for practitioners that are already trained in other PDO thread lift techniques, there is the possibility for recognition of prior learning. This will be assessed on a case by case basis and the practitioner will need to demonstrate competence with varied techniques and provide proof of training.
Thread lifting is a highly skilled minor surgery requiring local anaesthetic, it is not suitable for non-medical professionals. We delegate a medical professional as an NMBI registered nurse or midwife, IMC registered doctors and dental council of Ireland dentists. International delegates are welcome and will also have to verify qualifications and current membership to a medical board.
No, we provide all models for the practical component of the course. If you do wish to bring along a model, please let us know at the time of enrolment.
MINT PDO threads are one of the higher quality threads on the market. Produced with a patented press-moulded method which produces a more robust thread and allows for greater precision when inserting. Due to the moulded design, it creates less trauma to the skin and thus quicker healing times. The robustness of the thread allows easier handling for the practitioner, this, also aids in less stress at the insertion points a more accurate insertion, a more comfortable treatment for the patient.
PDO thread lifting is a highly skilled procedure that is invasive compared to typical skin treatments; it is classed as minor surgery. PDO threads are an implant that dissipates over time; however, damage can be done to muscle tissue, nerves, leaving scarring through poor technique. In short, without the proper training, PDO threads can go very wrong and open the practitioner up to litigation. If we bring basic logic into the equation injectable, local anaesthetic is used before the procedure, highlighting the treatment’s invasive nature compared to other procedures. The marketing of PDO threads as minimally invasive is only correct compared to traditional face lifting surgery.
Nurses and doctors can attend this course. We only accept NMBI registered nurses, IMC & Dental Council Ireland, doctors with current valid registration.

Yes, PDO threads, in general, lend themselves to complementing treatment. All regenerative skin treatments such as skin boosters, tissue stimulators. Laser and light therapy, platelet-rich plasma and medical micro-needling are all treatments that can be used to attain specific aesthetic outcomes for the patient.
In 2013, MINT™ received 510(k) clearance from the FDA as a Class II medical device, by demonstrating that the device to be marketed is safe and effective. MINT™ received global registrations for lifting indication from seven countries, such as the Korea MFDS, Europe CE, and China CFDA, to assure its excellent technological capabilities and reliable safety. In 2020, MINT™ became the only PDO suture in the US market to have received dual FDA clearances and is the only device of its kind to receive clearance for a lifting indication for nasolabial fold depth reduction.
